Lesson Information

Although I run Best Pick Guitar Teaching Agency full time, I still teach the guitar to a handful of students in my spare time because I love it…

On this page, I wanted to explain to you from a guitar teachers perspective a little more about what to expect in your guitar lessons.

Most guitar teachers tend to have a lot of different students whom they teach each week, so it may be best to book a regular slot for your lessons.

Students tend to have a 1 hour guitar lesson each week. It makes it much easier for your teacher to cover the techniques, chords, lead, rhythm and components of the songs and solo’s, although you’ll be able to  get through a lot of material in just 30 minutes if necessary.

And of course, if you’re struggling for money, then a 30 minute lesson is perfectly fine…

When I teach myself, I usually find that the students who are looking for half hour lessons are the younger children as their attention and focus only lasts about 30 mins.

If you are taking your child to the lesson, then as a parent, most teachers should allow you to sit in on the lesson and see your child’s progress.

Most guitar teachers usually teach lessons 1-to-1 but at the same time if you and a friend would like to learn together, then it’s usually fine. Just double check with your guitar teacher and they’ll be able to arrange it. Sometimes you’ll be able to split the cost of the lesson between you.

Again, I found from my experience that it takes a lot more focus for me to teach two people at the same time, especially when each student is at different skill levels.

Right now I’ve got several students who learn together… (father, son, and husband, wife) and it certainly works well. (Just let your teacher know in advance so they can tailor something to suit and fit you.)

What Equipment do I Need to Bring to the Guitar Lessons?

You shouldn’t need to take much with you to your lesson, but if you go armed with your guitar, a plectrum and if you’ve had lessons in the past, please take along your old notes and books so your new teacher can see where abouts you are in your learnings.

Most teachers provide an amplifier, guitar leads and the rest of the necessary equipment but you may want to double check with your teacher before you attend your lesson.

What Kind of Prices Can I Expect to Pay?

Guitar teachers in different areas of the country will differ in the cost of the lessons. The Musicians Unions recommended rate is currently £27 per hour although many teachers charge a lot less that this. (Others may charge more)

I know from doing my research that many other guitar teachers around the country charge between £15-£35 per hour. But of course the more expensive teachers will get you results you want much FASTER.

You can expect to pay roughly half, or just over half for 30 minute lessons.

Some teachers will offer a discount for students, OAP’s and other demographics so it’s worth asking them first.

You may also find that many teachers provide block bookings if you book 5 or 10 lessons in advance, (either as a birthday gift or christmas present for someone else, or just for yourself)

Important Information: Be careful learning with a guitar tutor who charges a very low lesson fee. Usually they don’t have much experience with teaching guitar and although the price per lesson is very low, it will usually take a LOT more lessons for you to get good at playing the guitar and because they may not have much experience, their teaching methods may not be up to scratch.

I think that covers most things, but if there is anything else you’d like to know about, such as choosing a guitar for yourself, partner or child… then drop me a message through the contact form, or give me a call and I’ll be glad to help.

If you’re ready to begin your exciting journey and learn the guitar, then head back to the page you came from and submit your details into the form at the bottom of that page and I’ll give you a call back, or give us a call on Freephone 0800 5300 187.

We can then find a guitar teacher who’s right for you in your local area.
