Guitar Tuition Liverpool | Toby Pottas

Guitar Tuition Liverpool

Name of Guitar Teacher - Toby Pottas

Teaching Location

I provide guitar tuition Liverpool and hold guitar lessons in Pall Mall, Liverpool, L1, L2, L3, possibly L4 areas of Liverpool.

Qualifications

I do not posess any official teaching qualifications as such and I have not done any grade examinations on the guitar. I switched over from the trumpet about 10 years ago. On the trumpet I reached grade 5 however. I played the guitar through university and I performed a number of songs at grade 7 and 8 standard.

Experience

Before I moved to Liverpool late last summer I spent a year back at home and decided to give guitar tuition a go for the first time. I aquired a small client base of young people aged between 10 – 15 made up of family friends really.

My playing experience is quite vast to be honest, too large to write down on here. I started the trumpet at the age of 11 and performed countless times playing it at concerts, festivals, school shows, grade examinations etc etc.

Once I began playing the guitar I joined a number of college groups including jazz, soul and big band which all performed regularly at school events and events outside of school.

After college I attended university in York and did a degree in Music Performance so performace was an everyday thing to be honest. Whilst here, I was a member of the YSJ Big Band on guitar, a jazz cover group on guitar, I sung bass in the Chamber Choir and the Gospel choir, I formed my own indie band and sung and played guitar in that also. I have performed at the York St. John graduation ceremonies in the York Minster, attended a ‘choir tour’ in plymouth and Liverpoool where I sung at both cathedrals. So performance wise, theres not a lot I haven’t done. But like I said, theres much more performace experience to account for.

Teaching Style

I suppose my style for guitar tuition in Liverpool is very relaxed. Targets are important but letting the student go at their own pace is very important for me because I don’t want to put anyone under un-neccessary pressure. I like to work from print outs containing scales and modes etc but I am probably even more comfortable just listening to music and learning about it that way also. Different people have different ways of learning however so exploring every possible route is vital to get the most out of the lessons from the start.

Specialities

When I first began playing the guitar I played a lot of Clapton and Hendrix. I called myself a blues guitarist for a while but these days I really will play any genre of music. Blues is probably still my strongest genre however.

I would prefer to teach electric guitar but don’t have a problem teaching acoustic also. If I had to choose I would say electric guitar.

I find it easy to teach improvisation techniques over scales etc and I have a good ability of composition.

Other Services, Areas of Knowledge & Musicianship

Over the past 5 years I have been writing, producing and performing my own material in a few bands. I have the ability to record and produce music at home in a basic capacity, (digital 8 track) so anybody wanting to explore that side of music would not be a problem. I do still have my trumpet which admittedly I haven’t played for a long time but it’s there if i need it :) I already mentioned my singing experience earlier which is pretty varied and extensive.

Other Information

I am 26 years old and play electric guitar as my main instrument. I currently live in Liverpool city centre and hold guitar tuition in Liverpool and lesson times would be preferable outside of school hours. Weekends would usually not be a problem either. I do not have any children and live with my partner. I would be willing to travel for lessons but distance could be an issue because I currently don’t own a car so moving equipment might cause problems. I own all the gear and equipment to teach electric guitar however.
